The Florida Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Task Force has released its third consensus document, highlighting significant progress in the fight against red tide. The report details key advancements in research, monitoring, and public communication since its last update in 2021.

Red tide, caused by the algae Karenia brevis, poses a serious threat to Florida’s environment, economy, and public health. The HAB Task Force, comprised of scientists, government agencies, and community partners, is dedicated to mitigating the impacts of these harmful blooms.

“Red tide presents unique challenges to Florida’s ecosystems, communities and economy,” said Dr. Katherine Hubbard, FWC, Chair of the Florida HAB Task Force. “This new document showcases the remarkable progress made and underscores the importance of continued collaboration and innovation to mitigate its impacts.”

Key Achievements Highlighted in the Report:

  • Enhanced Monitoring and Detection: The report emphasizes the use of cutting-edge technology like Imaging FlowCytobots and satellite sensors to improve red tide detection and forecasting. These tools, coupled with expanded sampling efforts, provide a clearer picture of bloom development and movement.
  • Communication Improvements: Recognizing the importance of public awareness, the task force has created multilingual educational materials, launched public awareness campaigns, and produced a video series (available in English and Spanish) covering red tide basics, seafood safety, and available resources.
  • Research and Innovation: Over 25 projects have been funded through the FWC Center for Red Tide Research and HAB Grant Program. These projects focus on critical areas like economic and oceanographic modeling, shellfish depuration techniques, and advanced bloom dynamics prediction.

The task force remains committed to tackling red tide through expanded research, enhanced monitoring, and strengthened partnerships. Upcoming initiatives include a State of the Science symposium and the development of new diagnostic tools for human and animal health.
