Florida Republican Mike Waltz has officially stepped down from his seat in Congress to assume his new role as National Security Adviser under President Donald Trump, following the president’s inauguration on Monday.

Waltz’s resignation from his Congressional District 6 seat was announced Monday on the House floor, marking the end of his tenure as a representative. His departure had been expected since November when Trump tapped him to serve as a key figure in his administration’s national security strategy.

First elected to Congress in 2018, Waltz was recently re-elected to a fourth term during the November 5, 2024 election. Throughout his tenure in the House, Waltz, a former Green Beret and national security expert, has been a vocal advocate for a strong national defense, counterterrorism initiatives, and bolstering the U.S. military’s readiness.

Following Waltz’s resignation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for a special election to fill the vacant seat. The primary election is scheduled for January 28, with the general election to follow on April 1.

Florida’s 6th Congressional District, which includes Flagler, Lake, Marion, Putnam, St. Johns, and Volusia counties, has been a Republican stronghold, and several GOP candidates are expected to vie for the nomination.

Waltz’s transition to the Trump administration comes at a crucial time, with national security challenges ranging from geopolitical tensions to domestic threats requiring immediate attention. As National Security Adviser, Waltz is expected to focus on bolstering border security, strengthening alliances, and tackling emerging global threats, all key pillars of the Trump administration’s foreign policy strategy.
