Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency as an unusual winter storm sweeps through the Florida Panhandle and parts of North Florida, bringing the threat of snow, ice, and freezing rain to a region unaccustomed to such conditions.

In an executive order issued Monday, DeSantis warned that “all modes of hazardous winter weather will be likely, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain.” Forecasts predict 1 to 3 inches of snow in the Panhandle, with icy conditions possibly spreading east to the Suwannee River Valley, creating significant hazards for residents and travelers.

“Ice accumulation from freezing rain is the most impactful winter hazard, and significant impacts to roadways, bridges, trees, and powerlines are possible,” the order stated.

The declaration grants authority to Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) Director Kevin Guthrie to coordinate response efforts. DeSantis also authorized the activation of the Florida National Guard to assist with storm response and recovery efforts as needed.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to deploy resources as necessary to keep Floridians safe,” DeSantis said in a press briefing Monday afternoon.

FDEM officials are urging residents to prepare for possible power outages, hazardous travel conditions, and disruptions to daily activities. Emergency shelters are being established in several counties to accommodate those in need.

In response to the impending weather emergency, Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-Miami) and Senate President Ben Albritton (R-Wauchula) announced the cancellation of all legislative committee meetings scheduled for this week in Tallahassee. Lawmakers cited concerns over travel safety and the potential for dangerous road conditions.

“With the expected weather conditions, it’s in the best interest of everyone’s safety to reschedule committee meetings and allow Floridians to focus on preparing for this rare winter storm,” Perez stated.

Authorities are urging Floridians, especially those unaccustomed to icy conditions, to take precautions, including:

  • Avoiding unnecessary travel during the peak of the storm.
  • Insulating pipes and ensuring heating systems are operational.
  • Stocking up on emergency supplies such as food, water, and batteries.
  • Checking on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals.

The Florida Highway Patrol is also warning of potentially dangerous road conditions, with bridges and overpasses being particularly susceptible to ice accumulation. Road crews are working to pre-treat key thoroughfares with salt and sand to minimize the impact.

Meteorologists predict that the cold snap could linger through mid-week, with temperatures expected to plunge into the teens overnight in some areas. Officials warn that the extreme cold could stress the state’s power grid and lead to further disruptions.
