The incident occurred around 5:42 AM near Milepost 6. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a Ford Mustang driven by a 58-year-old Spring Hill man was traveling southbound in the outside lane.

The driver of the Mustang initiated a lane change and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to rotate across the highway and collide with the median barrier wall. The Mustang then bounced back across the highway and into the path of the Tesla, resulting in a collision.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the Tesla was transported to a local hospital for medical care.
The southbound lanes of SR-589 were closed for approximately two hours while crews cleared the scene and investigated the accident. The roadway reopened around 7:30 AM.
