HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tragic train accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian on Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 3:52 p.m. on January 11, deputies responded to reports of a train striking a man near the intersection of Sydney Dover Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Upon arrival, authorities identified the deceased as 53-year-old Andres Pop-Tupil.

According to investigators, an eastbound Amtrak train was traveling through the area when Pop-Tupil attempted to cross the railroad tracks and was fatally struck. CSX Police and Amtrak investigators also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed condolences to Pop-Tupil’s family and friends. “My heart goes out to the family and friends who lost their loved one. This tragic accident reminds us all to be overly cautious around railroad tracks,” he said in a statement.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation remains active.
