Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) has joined Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) as an original co-sponsor of the reintroduced Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, aimed at ensuring that only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections.

The legislation, officially known as H.R. 22 in the 119th Congress, seeks to close loopholes that could allow non-citizens to influence election outcomes.

The SAVE Act proposes to strengthen election safeguards by requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship in person before registering individuals to vote in federal elections. It also mandates that states remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls, providing necessary tools and access to federal databases to facilitate the process.

Rep. Chip Roy emphasized the importance of the legislation, stating, “American elections belong to American citizens, and the public’s confidence in those elections is the cornerstone of our republic. Congress has a duty to ensure that elections cannot be influenced by non-citizens. The SAVE Act is critical to restoring trust in our democratic process.”

Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), who is co-leading the House effort, added, “It’s common sense that only American citizens should decide American elections. The SAVE Act upholds the integrity of our elections by requiring proof of citizenship to register, ensuring this fundamental right is reserved for Americans.”

The SAVE Act has garnered strong support from over 50 members of Congress and numerous advocacy organizations. Heritage Action Executive Vice President Ryan Walker called the legislation “a no-brainer to require proof of citizenship to vote.”

Cleta Mitchell, founder of the Only Citizens Vote Coalition, described the act as “a vital safeguard” to ensure that illegal ballots do not cancel out lawful votes. Similarly, Chris Chmielenski, President of the Immigration Accountability Project, emphasized that the act would “dramatically reduce the chances of non-citizens registering and voting.”

A recent poll conducted by Tea Party Patriots Action found that 87% of Americans support requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. This broad support underscores the bipartisan appeal of the SAVE Act and its focus on addressing public concerns about election integrity.

Rep. Roy expressed optimism about advancing the legislation in the Republican-controlled House and working with the Senate to send the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk. “With President Trump’s support, we can ensure that only citizens decide the outcome of American elections,” he stated.

Supporters of the SAVE Act believe it will protect the sanctity of the ballot box and prevent voter dilution caused by illegal registrations. However, critics argue that such measures could create barriers to voter participation. The ongoing debate over election integrity and voter access is expected to remain a central issue in the upcoming legislative session.

The SAVE Act’s reintroduction marks a significant step in safeguarding the electoral process and highlights the continued focus on ensuring secure and fair elections across the United States.
