A Gainesville man has been sentenced to over a year in federal prison for conspiring to defraud the Social Security Administration (SSA) out of over $70,000 in disability benefits.
Keith Allen Courtney, 53, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday to 13 months in federal prison for conspiracy. Courtney had pleaded guilty to the charges on April 12, 2024.
According to court documents, Courtney concealed his employment while applying for and receiving Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB).

Based on the false information he provided, the SSA approved his application, and he received monthly payments to which he was not entitled. Between February 2016 and May 2020, Courtney fraudulently received a total of $71,208 in disability benefits.
In addition to his prison sentence, Courtney was also ordered to forfeit the $71,208, representing the proceeds of his crime.
The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
