House Republicans are calling for a federal investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) over her involvement with the now-dissolved House Jan. 6 select committee.

The 128-page report released by a GOP-led House panel focuses on Cheney and others who held positions on the J6 committee.

In a Truth Social post, Trump suggested that Cheney “could be in a lot of trouble based on the evidence obtained by the subcommittee.”

The statement came shortly after Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who chairs the House Administration Committee’s oversight subcommittee, released the report accusing Cheney of ethical breaches and bias in her role as the committee’s vice-chair.

Loudermilk’s report accuses Cheney of presenting “uncorroborated, cherry-picked, and, at times, false evidence” against Trump during the committee’s investigation. The document also alleges that Cheney improperly influenced former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony.

Hutchinson, a star witness during the committee’s high-profile hearings, testified about her “moral struggle” with the events of Jan. 6, claiming her initial attorney, Stefan Passantino, had urged her to downplay her knowledge. The GOP report alleges Cheney worked with Alyssa Farah Griffin, another former Trump aide, to encourage Hutchinson to change her story—a claim Cheney has vehemently denied.

“The report intentionally disregards the truth and the Select Committee’s tremendous weight of evidence,” Cheney said in a statement, calling the accusations a “malicious and cowardly assault on the truth.”

The Biden administration has reportedly considered issuing preemptive pardons to figures like Cheney, who have been targeted by Trump and his allies. However, some Democrats warn such actions could set a risky precedent.

Meanwhile, Trump has ramped up legal threats against critics and media outlets since his election victory. This week, he filed a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register over a pre-election poll and settled a defamation case with ABC News for $15 million over coverage related to Jan. 6.

Trump’s critics, including Cheney, face an uncertain future as he prepares to begin his second term. If loyalists like Kash Patel, a staunch Trump ally, are appointed to lead the FBI, Trump could be in a stronger position to pursue legal and political retribution.

For Cheney, the GOP’s call for an investigation marks a significant escalation in efforts to discredit the work of the Jan. 6 committee. As the political landscape shifts, the fate of Cheney and other Trump critics will likely serve as a litmus test for the Republican Party’s evolving priorities.
