TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Police Department (TPD) announced the arrest of Derrick Dempsey, 35, in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred on Tuesday, December 17th, at a residence in the 1700 block of West Saint Joseph Street. Dempsey is charged with First-Degree Murder.
“This is a tragic loss that no family should have to endure,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “We are thankful this dangerous individual is no longer on the street and for the partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office that led to a quick arrest in this case.”

Shortly before 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday, TPD officers responded to reports of gunshots emanating from a residence on West Saint Joseph Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult white female victim in her mid-30s suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately rendered aid, but the victim succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.
According to witnesses, Dempsey was arguing with a woman known to him inside a pickup truck. The argument escalated, and witnesses reported Dempsey exiting the vehicle, striking the victim, and retrieving a firearm before a gunshot was heard.

With the assistance of HCSO, Dempsey was apprehended without incident. The weapon used in the shooting, a shotgun, was also recovered.
“This dangerous and calloused criminal showed no regard for human life, but thanks to the strong partnership between the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Tampa Police Department, we were able to bring this individual into custody,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We are proud to provide the assistance and assets needed to support our partners in keeping our community safe.”
