Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced criminal charges against Ryan Routh for the attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump, an incident that also resulted in serious injuries to a six-year-old girl during a traffic stop on I-95.
The charges include attempted felony murder and domestic terrorism.
Law enforcement officers intercepted Routh on I-95 following witness testimony linking him to the assassination attempt. Officers, acting to protect public safety, stopped traffic in both directions to apprehend the suspect, not knowing if the vehicle contained explosives or other threats.

During the stop, a tragic accident occurred, leaving a six-year-old girl seriously injured. “When you couple those injuries with the suspect’s criminal actions, it elevates this case to one of domestic terrorism and attempted felony murder,” Moody stated.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), under Governor Ron DeSantis’s directive, led an exhaustive investigation. The department issued 18 court processes, including search warrants and subpoenas, with assistance from multiple sheriff’s offices and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
Despite federal jurisdiction, FHP faced challenges due to a lack of cooperation from federal agencies. “It became apparent that federal efforts were obstructing our investigation into state law violations,” FHP Corporal Gary Howes explained.
Attorney General Moody praised local and state law enforcement for their dedication despite federal obstacles. She highlighted the critical role of Florida’s law enforcement agencies in securing evidence and ensuring public safety.

Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-197 to initiate the state investigation, emphasizing Florida’s sovereignty in prosecuting crimes within its jurisdiction. “This investigation vindicates the rights of our state and its people,” Moody said.
Moody called for new leadership at federal agencies, including the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI, to restore trust and ensure cooperation with state law enforcement. She expressed support for President-elect Trump’s nominees, including former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, to key federal roles.
“We are not in a traditional moment in this nation,” Moody said. “With fresh leadership, we can renew faith in our institutions and protect the American people from unprecedented threats.”
Law enforcement leaders, including Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, commended the teamwork involved in apprehending Routh. “This was a collective effort that prevented further tragedy,” Snyder said. He also noted the vital role of frontline FBI agents, distancing them from higher-level political decisions.
Attorney General Moody and law enforcement officials reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing justice for the victims and holding Routh accountable. “This team effort underscores our unwavering dedication to protecting Floridians and upholding the law,” Moody concluded.
The investigation remains active.
