HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County Administrator Bonnie Wise has signed an executive order extending the state of local emergency originally enacted on September 23, 2024, in response to Hurricane Helene. The extension will remain in effect through December 23, 2024.
The local emergency declaration, established under the County’s Emergency Management Ordinance and Chapter 252, Florida Statutes, allows the County to take swift actions to protect public health, safety, and welfare.

It also facilitates access to federal reimbursement for specific emergency expenses. By law, such a declaration must be renewed every seven days unless rescinded or extended.
Hurricane Helene initially prompted the declaration as it approached Florida earlier this fall. Governor Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency for the state of Florida in response to the storm.
