ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – As the holiday season approaches, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue (SPFR) is urging residents to be mindful of the potential dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries power many popular holiday gifts, from smartphones and tablets to toys and electric scooters.

Lithium-ion battery fires can be incredibly destructive, causing significant damage to property and posing a serious risk to life. To prevent such incidents, SPFR recommends the following safety tips:

  • Use compatible chargers: Always use the charger provided by the manufacturer.
  • Avoid overcharging: Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
  • Inspect for damage: Discard any damaged, swollen, or leaking batteries.
  • Charge safely: Never charge devices on soft surfaces or near flammable materials.
  • Store properly: Keep batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

If you notice any signs of a faulty battery, such as unusual odors, swelling, excessive heat, or leaks, stop using the device immediately, move it away from flammable materials, and contact 911.

In addition to battery safety, SPFR emphasizes the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home. Smoke alarms provide crucial early warnings in case of a fire, allowing residents to evacuate safely. If you need a smoke alarm, SPFR offers free installation through its HomeSafe Program.

“Smoke alarms are a critical part of home fire safety, especially during the busy holiday season,” said Chief Womack. “If you need a smoke alarm, we’re here to help. Just contact us, and we’ll install one for you at no cost.”

In the event of a fire, remember to evacuate immediately and call 911. Do not attempt to extinguish a battery fire on your own.
