Governor Ron DeSantis has extended the deployment of the Florida National Guard at state prisons for another six months, citing persistent staffing shortages.
The National Guard was initially activated in September 2022 to address critical staffing gaps within the correctional system. This latest extension, announced Thursday, marks a continuation of a policy that has been in place for over two years.

Despite some improvements in staffing levels, the Governor’s order emphasizes that ongoing shortages still pose a threat to the safety of correctional officers, inmates, and the public. The National Guard’s presence is deemed crucial for maintaining order and security within the prisons.
This decision reflects the ongoing challenges faced by Florida’s correctional system in recruiting and retaining staff. While the National Guard provides temporary relief, it also highlights the need for long-term solutions to address the staffing crisis.
