A new migrant caravan, comprised of approximately 1,500 people mainly from Central and South America, has embarked on a journey from southern Mexico, hoping to reach the U.S. border before the upcoming presidential inauguration.
The caravan departed from Tapachula, a city near the Guatemalan border where many migrants are stranded due to a lack of permission to travel further into Mexico. Many are motivated by a sense of urgency, believing that reaching the U.S. will become more difficult after the inauguration.

Migrant caravans have become a common sight in recent years, offering safety in numbers for those who cannot afford to pay smugglers. However, the journey is fraught with danger, including extortion, kidnapping, and violence at the hands of drug cartels.
The grueling journey north also poses significant challenges, with the nearest border crossing over 1,100 miles away. The route is long and arduous, especially for families traveling with children.
Despite the obstacles, the migrants are determined to reach the U.S. border, driven by a desire for a better life and a fear of increased restrictions in the future.

The U.S. government recently expanded the availability of the CBP One app, allowing migrants in southern Mexico to apply for appointments to enter the United States. However, many migrants still prefer to be closer to the border to avoid missing their appointment if they secure one.
Whether this caravan will reach the U.S. border remains uncertain. Mexican authorities have cracked down on transportation options for migrants, making the journey even more difficult. However, the migrants’ determination and the looming political changes in the U.S. are fueling their desperate push northward.
