Tobacco Road To Be Resurfaced And Improved In Hillsborough County

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A major improvement project is coming to Tobacco Road in northern Hillsborough County.

Funded by the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Program, this project will resurface and enhance over 1.5 miles of roadway between Hutchison Road and Van Dyke Road.

Project Highlights:

  • Road Reconstruction and Widening: The existing asphalt pavement will be reconstructed and widened from Hutchison Road to north of Happy Trails Lane.
  • Pavement Rehabilitation: Existing asphalt will be rehabilitated along Hutchison Road (west and east of Tobacco Road) and along Tobacco Road from north of Happy Trails Lane to Van Dyke Road.
  • Accessibility Improvements: Sidewalks and pedestrian curb ramps will be constructed at the intersections of Tobacco Road with Hutchison Road and Turtle Ridge Drive to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Enhanced Safety for Cyclists and Pedestrians: “Sharrows” (shared lane markings) will be added from Hutchison Road to north of Happy Trails Lane, and buffered bicycle lanes will be installed from north of Happy Trails Lane to Van Dyke Road.

Construction Details:

  • Start Date: Early 2025
  • Expected Completion: Early 2026
  • Typical Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (nighttime work may be necessary)
  • Road Closures: Expect temporary road closures during portions of the project that involve full-depth pavement reclamation.

Tree Removal: Some trees will need to be removed for the road widening.
