As most states adjusted their clocks this past weekend, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) renewed his call for Congress to pass the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act, aiming to make Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent and end the twice-yearly clock changes.

In a video message, Senator Tuberville highlighted the benefits of a permanent DST, including potential health improvements and added daylight for evening activities.

“Alabamians have made it clear that springing forward and falling back should be a thing of the past,” said Senator Tuberville. “Centuries ago, a time change might have made sense, but it doesn’t today. An additional hour of sunshine in the evenings during cold winter months would be welcome news for folks on their way to work and kids on their way home from school. It just makes sense to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, and I will keep fighting to get it across the goal line.”

Since joining Congress, Tuberville has introduced the Sunshine Protection Act in response to feedback from residents across Alabama who are eager to see an end to the time changes.

The U.S. Senate passed the act in March 2022 with unanimous consent, but the bill did not reach a vote in the House before the 117th Congress ended, necessitating reintroduction in the current 118th Congress.

The Alabama Legislature approved a bill in 2021 to make DST permanent, but the change can only take effect if federal legislation is passed.
