An Arizona man has been sentenced to eight months in prison for making a false statement during the purchase of firearms that were later used in hate crimes against Jewish community members in California.

Eric Celaya, 30, of Phoenix, pleaded guilty to making a material false statement during the purchase of a firearm. In January 2023, Celaya purchased two firearms from a licensed dealer in Tempe, Arizona, falsely claiming he was the actual buyer. He then provided the firearms to Jamie Tran.

The following month, Tran used the firearms to shoot two Jewish individuals in California. Tran was subsequently charged with hate crimes in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

While Celaya admitted to illegally purchasing the firearms, there is no evidence suggesting he was aware of Tran’s intentions or beliefs.

This case highlights the serious consequences of making false statements when purchasing firearms. It also underscores the importance of responsible gun ownership and the need to prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

“Straw purchasing” firearms, as in this case, is a federal crime that can have devastating consequences. Celaya’s sentencing sends a clear message that those who engage in such illegal activities will be held accountable.

This case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime. The FBI and the ATF conducted the investigation, and the case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
