The battle over abortion rights in Florida has become a big-money affair. The Floridians Protecting Freedom committee, spearheading the campaign to pass a constitutional amendment protecting abortion access, has raised over $110 million since April 2023.
This massive fundraising haul highlights the intense fight over Amendment 4, which aims to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. The amendment would effectively overturn a law passed last year that bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
While the committee has raised a staggering amount, it has also spent heavily, with expenditures exceeding $95 million. The money has likely gone towards advertising, organizing, and other campaign efforts to sway voters.
The amendment faces strong opposition from Governor Ron DeSantis, who is actively campaigning against it. Despite the financial firepower of the pro-amendment group, passage is far from guaranteed. Amendment 4 requires 60% of the vote to pass.
This high-stakes battle underscores the deep divisions over abortion access in Florida and across the nation. With Election Day looming, both sides are pulling out all the stops to influence voters on this contentious issue.
