With Halloween upon us, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) are reminding everyone to prioritize safety during the spooky festivities.

Data shows a concerning trend of increased pedestrian crashes as trick-or-treating begins and darkness falls, with 7 p.m. being the peak time for such incidents.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for all, FLHSMV and FHP offer these essential safety tips:

For Trick-or-Treaters:

  • Be Safe, Be Seen: Wear costumes that are visible in the dark, especially when crossing streets.
  • Use Sidewalks and Crosswalks: Whenever possible, stick to designated pedestrian areas. If sidewalks are unavailable, walk facing traffic and stay close to the curb.

For Drivers:

  • Slow Down and Stay Alert: Children in costumes may have difficulty seeing and hearing approaching vehicles.
  • Reduce Distractions: Avoid anything that takes your attention away from the road, such as texting or eating.
  • Watch for Children: Be extra vigilant, especially in residential areas and places where pedestrians may not be expected.

By following these simple safety guidelines, everyone can contribute to a fun and safe Halloween for the entire community.
