Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, known as the second person to walk on the moon, endorsed Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign in a social media post on Wednesday.

Aldrin praised Trump’s first term for prioritizing space exploration, citing the establishment of the Space Force and renewed efforts to reach the Moon and eventually Mars.

“Over time, I have seen our government’s approach to space wax and wane,” Aldrin wrote. “But under the first Trump Administration, I was impressed to see how human space exploration was elevated as a policy of high importance again. Under President Trump’s first term, America saw a revitalized interest in Space, and his Administration reignited national efforts to get back to the Moon, and push on to Mars.”

Aldrin highlighted the importance of leadership qualities like “clarity in judgment, decisiveness, and calm under pressure” in his endorsement, underscoring his belief that Trump is well-suited to address the challenges facing the nation. “In times of uncertainty, real leaders are needed to guide and inspire,” Aldrin stated, urging Americans to choose a leader with a strong vision for the country’s future.

The endorsement comes as the race intensifies, with high-profile endorsements for both Trump and his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Recent Trump endorsements include Hamtramck, Michigan Mayor Amer Ghalib, steelworkers in Pennsylvania, and billionaire SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who endorsed Trump in July and has appeared at various GOP events. Aldrin’s endorsement adds to a growing list of national security officials and prominent figures supporting Trump.

Aldrin, part of the historic 1969 Apollo 11 mission and the first astronaut with a doctoral degree, remains an influential figure in space exploration advocacy. He recently celebrated his 93rd birthday with his marriage to Dr. Anca Faur.
