The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance in the southwestern Caribbean Sea that has the potential to develop into a tropical depression later this week.
Forecasters say a broad area of low pressure is expected to form in the region over the next few days. Conditions are favorable for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form as early as this weekend. The system is then predicted to drift northward or northeastward over the Caribbean Sea.

Currently, the chance of formation within the next 48 hours is low. However, the probability increases to 40% over the next seven days.
It is still too early to determine the exact path and potential intensity of this system. Residents in the Caribbean and along the Gulf Coast should monitor its progress and be prepared for potential impacts from a tropical cyclone.
