A Norfolk man with a prior conviction for counterfeiting is heading back to prison after being sentenced to over three years for passing fake currency.
Tyree Lamar Shoulders, 33, was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for his latest counterfeiting scheme.
Court documents reveal that Shoulders passed counterfeit bills on at least three occasions between August and December of 2023. He used the fake money to purchase gasoline, candy, and even attempted to load money onto a bank card.

In December 2023, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Shoulders’ residence, where they discovered counterfeit $10, $20, and $50 bills. This wasn’t Shoulders’ first encounter with the law for counterfeiting. In 2014, he was convicted of similar charges and served a two-year prison sentence.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
