HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – In the wake of Hurricane Milton, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with the Florida Cattlemen’s Association (FCA), Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson, and local farmers and ranchers to protect livestock and provide much-needed aid.
During the storm, hundreds of cattle were stranded by floodwaters and faced food shortages. The Sheriff’s Agricultural Crimes Squad (Ag Squad) responded to numerous calls for help, and together with Brevard County deputies, rescued 121 head of cattle from rising waters.

As the storm passed, ‘Operation Bale Out’ commenced. With many roads impassable, the Ag Squad partnered with the Aviation Section to airlift 232 bales of hay and 6,700 pounds of range pellets to stranded cattle.
Thanks to generous donations from the FCA and the Department of Agriculture, nearly 500 cattle received essential food supplies.

“It warms my heart to see the community come together to keep our farmers and their herd safe,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Farmers are the backbone of our community, and we will do everything we can to ensure they have the tools and resources they need to continue prospering here in Hillsborough County.”
The FCA, FC Foundation, Hillsborough County Cattlemen’s Association, and Hillsborough County Cattlemen’s Foundation all contributed donations of hay, feed, fencing supplies, and other essential items. This collaborative effort demonstrates the resilience and spirit of community in the face of adversity.
