The drills, named “Joint Sword-2024B,” simulated a blockade of Taiwan and involved the Liaoning aircraft carrier group, marking an escalation from previous exercises.
The Chinese government and state media issued harsh statements condemning Lai’s speech and emphasizing China’s determination to achieve “complete reunification of the motherland.” The Ministry of National Defense warned of a “sword hanging over their heads” for those seeking Taiwanese independence.
