In a significant escalation, the US military conducted strikes against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Wednesday. The operation targeted underground weapons storage facilities containing advanced weaponry used to threaten commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Notably, this marked the first time B-2 Spirit stealth bombers were deployed in the US campaign against the Houthis, signifying a heightened response to the group’s persistent attacks on shipping and US Navy assets. The B-2 bombers possess a larger payload capacity than the fighter jets previously used, enabling more extensive strikes.

These strikes come amidst heightened tensions in the region, with Israel anticipated to retaliate against Iran for a recent missile barrage and ongoing conflicts with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. The US has also deployed an advanced anti-missile system to Israel for added protection.

While the US has previously partnered with the UK in strikes against the Houthis, this operation was conducted solely by US forces. Despite past efforts to degrade the Houthi arsenal, the group continues to launch attacks, including a recent claim of firing missiles and drones at US destroyers.

The Houthis, who receive support from Iran, claim their aggression is in solidarity with Hamas and Hezbollah. Their attacks have disrupted commercial shipping, endangered maritime traffic, and caused environmental concerns, including an oil leak from a Greek-flagged vessel in August.

The US maintains a strong military presence in the region, including a carrier strike group, destroyers, and an amphibious ready group, underscoring its commitment to regional stability and maritime security.
