Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has joined Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) in leading a group of Republican lawmakers in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland. The letter expresses concerns over the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) inaction regarding non-citizens being registered to vote in U.S. elections.
This follow-up letter comes after a previous request for information from July 2024, which went unanswered by Garland and the DOJ.

The lawmakers, which include several prominent Republican senators and representatives, pointed to reports from states like Virginia and Texas, where non-citizens were found on voter rolls and had, in some cases, cast votes.
In Virginia, for example, over 6,000 non-citizens were removed from voter rolls between 2022 and 2023. Similarly, Texas reported over 6,500 non-citizens registered to vote, with nearly 2,000 having a voter history.
The letter highlights the lawmakers’ concerns about election integrity and the potential impact of non-citizen voting on public trust in the electoral process.
They emphasized the importance of DOJ action, particularly with the upcoming 2024 presidential election, and reiterated their request for specific information about DOJ efforts to address and prevent non-citizen voting.
The letter was signed by a large group of Republican lawmakers from both the Senate and House, signaling broad support for addressing this issue ahead of the election. They have requested a prompt response from Attorney General Garland by mid-October.
