PASCO COUNTY, Fla. – The Pasco Sheriff’s Office (PSO) has addressed rumors circulating about a special needs shelter located at the intersection of Sunlake and SR 54.

“The Pasco Sheriff’s Office has received numerous questions regarding a shelter at the intersection of Sunlake and SR54 due to the below inaccurate report. To be clear, the information included in this tweet is entirely inaccurate and is not true but has sadly led to rumors that we must address,” said PSO.

The report in question was posted after a tipster reported to JLR Investigates that 600 Haitian Migrants were being housed in the shelter.

“THIS LOCATION IS A SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTER ORDERED BY THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TO ALLEVIATE IMPACTS TO AREA SCHOOLS AND ALLOW THEM TO RETURN TO SERVICE,” said PSO.

According to PSO, this allows schools to resume normal operations more quickly.

“There is no threat to our community and the Sheriff’s Office has spoken directly to representatives of the Florida Department of Emergency Management to confirm that information again today on a site visit by deputies and supervisors out of an abundance of caution,” said PSO.
