The United States is sending an advanced anti-missile defense system, along with approximately 100 US troops to operate it, to Israel in response to recent Iranian attacks. The deployment of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery aims to strengthen Israel’s defenses against potential future missile attacks.
This move comes after unprecedented attacks by Iran against Israel on April 13th and October 1st and as tensions escalate in the region.

While the US has previously deployed THAAD to the Middle East, including a 2019 exercise in Israel, the current deployment of US troops within Israel is notable given the heightened security situation.
The THAAD system is designed for ballistic missile defense and could be crucial in protecting Israel if Iran retaliates for any Israeli strikes. The US has been in close consultation with Israel regarding its response to Iran’s aggression, urging restraint and proportionality.
This deployment is part of a broader increase in US military presence in the Middle East since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October 2023.

The US has bolstered its regional air defenses, deployed warships and aircraft carriers, and sent troops to Cyprus for potential evacuation assistance.
