Hasan Williams, a 27-year-old from Burlington, Vermont, has been sentenced to 60 months (5 years) in federal prison for possessing a loaded handgun after a previous felony conviction. This sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III, will be followed by three years of supervised release.
In August 2023, Burlington police responded to a late-night report of a possible assault involving a firearm. Officers encountered Williams near the Chittenden County Superior Court.
While questioning him, police noticed Williams wearing a shoulder bag similar to one described in a recent incident involving a gun. When officers attempted to secure the bag, Williams resisted, punching an officer in the head. During the struggle, the bag opened, revealing a loaded handgun.
Williams had a prior felony conviction for assault and robbery in 2016, making his possession of the firearm illegal.
United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest praised the Burlington Police Department and the ATF for their work in apprehending Williams and ensuring community safety.
ATF Special Agent in Charge James M. Ferguson emphasized the serious nature of the crime, stating that “firearms in the hands of violent felons are a major driver of additional violent crime.” Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad highlighted the importance of removing violent criminals from the streets and thanked the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their efforts in prosecuting the case.
