Speaker Mike Johnson leaned on Democratic support Wednesday to pass a stopgap funding bill in the face of Republican opposition, successfully avoiding a government shutdown.

The bill, which now heads to the Senate, extends government funding until December 20, setting the stage for a high-pressure spending battle at the end of the year.

By then, the political landscape will have shifted significantly following the November elections, with major funding and other critical priorities on the congressional agenda.

The outcome of the elections will influence Johnson’s leverage in the upcoming spending negotiations.

The Senate is anticipated to vote on the bill later Wednesday evening. Once approved, it will be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature to become law.
