Tragedy has struck the endangered Florida panther population with the recent deaths of three females. The remains of an 11-year-old panther (FP247) were discovered in Collier County on September 21st, with a suspected cause of death being a vehicle collision.
Just two days earlier, the remains of a 6-year-old panther (UCFP467) were also found in Collier County, though the cause of death remains unknown.
On September 17th, a 10-year-old panther (UCFP466) was found dead on CR835 in Hendry County, likely the victim of another vehicle collision. These incidents highlight the ongoing threat to the survival of these magnificent creatures.

You Can Help Protect the Panther
Florida residents can directly support panther conservation efforts by purchasing a “Protect the Panther” license plate. The fees from these sales are the primary funding source for the FWC’s vital research and management programs for Florida panthers.
Drive Safely, Save a Panther
Vehicle collisions remain the leading cause of death for Florida panthers. The FWC reminds motorists to slow down and obey posted speed limits, especially in designated panther zones.

These zones, located in several South Florida counties, coincide with areas where panthers are known to cross roads. By driving cautiously in these areas, you can help ensure the survival of the endangered Florida panther and protect yourself from potential accidents.
By examining the remains, biologists gain crucial insights into the health and challenges facing the panther population. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) urges the public to report any injured or dead panthers immediately to their Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
