Alabama began distributing its first mail-in ballots to voters on Wednesday, marking the start of early voting more than 50 days ahead of the November elections.
Voters who requested mail-in ballots in Alabama will be the first to cast their votes in the local, state, and presidential races. Wisconsin is set to begin distributing mail-in ballots the next week, on September 19.
Originally, North Carolina was slated to begin mail-in voting earlier, but it was delayed due to a court order requiring the reprinting of ballots after former independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. withdrew and requested his name be removed from the ballot.
More than 20 other states, including Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia, will begin mailing ballots later this month,

Mail-in voting has grown in popularity since the pandemic. In the 2020 election, nearly half of voters used mail-in ballots, compared to around 25% in 2016, according to the Pew Research Center. However, in Alabama, mail-in voting remains less common, accounting for only 3% of votes cast in the 2022 election.
