An illegal immigrant has been charged with falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to vote in multiple elections and obtain several passports, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and Resident Agent in Charge Joseph R. Wysowaty of the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) Atlanta Resident Office.
Angelica Maria Francisco, 42, allegedly assumed the identity of a U.S. citizen in 2011, using it to obtain a passport and travel to and from Guatemala multiple times.
She also registered to vote in Alabama under the false identity and cast ballots in several elections.
Francisco has agreed to plead guilty to nine charges, including false claims of citizenship, false statements in passport applications, and aggravated identity theft. The court will schedule a hearing for her to formally enter her plea.
DSS investigated the case, with assistance from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the East Metro Area Crime Center, and the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brett A. Janich is prosecuting the case.
