The shooting stemmed from a case of mistaken identity. On December 28, 2018, the victims were waiting in their SUV when Matthews, believing their vehicle was involved in a prior shooting, opened fire with an assault rifle. The child was shot nine times, while the father sustained injuries to his leg and hand.

All three defendants pleaded guilty in March 2024.
