The Florida Public Service Commission concluded a week-long hearing Friday regarding Tampa Electric Co.’s proposal to increase base electric rates. The utility is seeking a significant $287.98 million increase in 2025, with further increases in 2026 and 2027.
The proposal aims to fund upgrades to power plants and the expansion of solar energy facilities.
However, consumer advocates, including the state Office of Public Counsel, and other parties are pushing for a reduction in the proposed rate hike.

The hearing, which began on Monday, involved extensive testimony and detailed examination of the proposal.
Base rates significantly impact customers’ monthly bills, and rate cases are typically complex, drawn-out affairs involving substantial amounts of data. Various parties participated in the case, representing diverse interests, including consumer groups, large electricity users, environmental organizations, and government entities.

Attorneys will now file briefs in September, and the commission is expected to issue its decision in time for the new rates to take effect on January 1st.
