The Florida Gulf is beckoning anglers this Labor Day weekend with favorable weather and a variety of fish on the bite.

Whether you’re heading offshore for big game, exploring the nearshore reefs, or sticking to the inshore flats, there’s plenty of action to be had. Let’s dive into the details of what’s biting and where to find them.

Offshore:

  • Amberjack: Now that the season is open, these hard fighters are providing plenty of action. Look for them around wrecks and reefs in deeper waters.
  • Red Snapper: Still a good bet in deeper waters (80-100 feet+). Use live bait or cut bait on the bottom.
  • Grouper: Red grouper are biting well in depths of 60-120 feet, especially around ledges and structure. Gag grouper season is closed, so be sure to release any you catch.
  • Pelagic Action: Keep an eye out for mahi-mahi, blackfin tuna, and wahoo, especially around floating debris or weed lines.

Nearshore:

  • Mangrove Snapper: The bite is steady in nearshore waters, particularly around bridges, jetties, and rock piles. Live shrimp or small pinfish are good baits.
  • Spanish Mackerel: These speedsters are providing plenty of fun for anglers trolling or casting spoons and jigs near the beaches.
  • Tripletail: Look for them around buoys, crab trap floats, and other floating debris. Live shrimp or small baitfish work well.

Inshore:

  • Snook: Snook season is open! Target them around mangroves, docks, and seawalls with live bait or lures that mimic mullet or pinfish.
  • Redfish: Look for reds in the flats, creeks, and oyster bars. Live shrimp, cut bait, or jigs are all good options.
  • Trout: Trout fishing can be good in the early morning or late evening around grass flats and potholes. Topwater lures, soft plastics, or live shrimp will tempt them.
