In a landmark effort to address Florida’s pressing water quality issues, Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) has announced the first-annual Florida Water Quality Summit, aimed at fostering open collaboration and dialogue among diverse stakeholders.
Representing Florida’s 19th Congressional District, Donalds has been a staunch advocate for protecting and enhancing the quality of water in Southwest Florida and across the state.
Recognizing the complexity of water quality policy, Donalds emphasized the need for a platform where individuals from various industries can engage in honest conversations about the future of Florida’s water.

“While I often hear different perspectives about water quality, it’s rare that individuals from different industries have the opportunity to speak honestly with one another,” wrote Donalds in an op-ed. “This is unfortunate because there are common interests that can be leveraged to improve water quality.”
The Florida Water Quality Summit will bring together experts from industries including recreation, boating, conservation, fishing, agriculture, development, tourism, and all levels of government. The event will be a unique opportunity for cross-industry dialogue, focusing on issues like clean water, Everglades restoration, economic impacts, and innovative solutions to water quality challenges.
A key feature of the Summit is its off-the-record format, allowing participants to engage freely without concerns of being misquoted or taken out of context. “The relaxed setting will foster honest and open discussions, preserving the integrity of the conversation,” said Donalds. “My hope is that, through joint effort and meaningful action, we can collectively protect Florida’s unique ecosystems and ensure economic success for years to come.”

Discussions at the Summit will cover a range of topics, including bipartisan efforts to improve water quality, the impact of 404 permits on Everglades restoration, and new approaches to combating water quality challenges.
In addition to hosting the Summit, Donalds has introduced several water-related legislative initiatives, including the Water Quality & Environmental Innovation Act, Combat Harmful Algal Blooms Act, and Convert HABs to Fuel Act.
“As Floridians, regardless of industry, we can make a difference by working together,” Donalds concluded. “I will continue to lead initiatives that improve water quality and foster collaboration for the benefit of future generations.”
