TAMPA, Fla. – Florida regulators began hearings Monday on Tampa Electric Co.’s proposal to increase base electric rates, with consumer and business advocates calling for a reduction in the requested increases.

The utility is seeking a $287.98 million increase in 2025, followed by additional increases in 2026 and 2027.

While Tampa Electric argues that the increases are necessary to maintain reliable service and invest in infrastructure upgrades, critics contend that the proposal is excessive and would burden customers with unnecessarily high bills.

The Public Service Commission’s hearing on the matter is expected to continue throughout the week, with a key point of contention being the utility’s targeted return on equity.
