ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The City of St. Petersburg’s Parks & Recreations Department and the Kissimmee Valley Foresters are carrying out a prescribed burn at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve today, August 20, which started around 10 a.m.

The burn will focus on units 9, 10, 11, and 18, with the potential to include units 8, 20, 21, 21a, 23b, and 24 if weather conditions permit. All trails at the preserve will be closed during the burn operation.

These units comprise 84 acres of the preserve.

Prescribed burns are a regular part of land management at the preserve, offering benefits like reducing fire hazards, protecting communities, improving habitats, and promoting healthy growth. The frequency of these burns varies based on factors such as vegetation, climate, and terrain.
