A three-day manhunt for an escaped convicted murderer ended early Friday morning when Ramone Alston, 30, was apprehended without incident at a hotel in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Alston, serving a life sentence for the 2015 murder of a one-year-old child, escaped from custody while being transported for a medical appointment on Tuesday.

The capture involved a collaborative effort from various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI Charlotte SWAT team, Kannapolis Police, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Following Alston’s arrest, an acquaintance, Jacobia Crisp, was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive.

Alston now faces additional charges for his escape and will be held in a high-security unit within the state prison system while awaiting trial.

The escape occurred when Alston managed to free himself from leg restraints and flee into the woods near UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, where he was scheduled for an appointment. The extensive search operation covered a wide area, ultimately leading authorities over 100 miles away to Kannapolis.

This incident has brought renewed attention to the 2015 Christmas Day shooting that claimed the life of one-year-old Maleah Williams. Alston and another man pleaded guilty to their involvement in the tragic incident, with Alston receiving a life sentence.
