Ukrainian forces have crossed into Russian territory and reportedly secured control of 400 miles of the Kursk region. This marks the first time Ukrainian troops have breached Russian borders since the war began in 2022.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy confirmed the advance and claimed the capture of over 100 Russian soldiers. The incursion, involving thousands of Ukrainian troops, has reportedly prompted Russia to pull troops away from the frontline in Ukraine to counter the attack.

The move caught the Biden administration off guard, with U.S. officials stating they were unaware of Ukraine’s plans. The White House reiterated its non-involvement in the operation.

“We had nothing to do with this. This is something for the Ukrainians to speak to their military operations,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday. “But we have no involvement.”

This incursion marks a shift in Ukraine’s strategy from a primarily defensive stance to a more offensive approach. While Ukraine receives significant military aid from Western nations, its manpower challenges pose difficulties in achieving victory against Russia.

Ukrainian officials have stated that the operation’s objective is not to occupy Russian territory but to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks.

“We are advancing in the Kursk region, one to two kilometers in various areas since the beginning of the day. We have captured more than 100 Russian servicemen during this period. I am grateful to everyone involved; this will accelerate the return of our guys and girls home,” Zelenskyy said Wednesday.
