TAMPA, Fla. – Heavy rain has delayed the resurfacing project on North Howard Avenue, pushing the closure through the end of next week. The closure is necessary for the complete reconstruction and repaving of the road between West Kennedy Boulevard and West Fig Street.

Crews are in the final stages of this major project aimed at improving safety and mobility. Despite the delay, all work is still expected to be finished by the end of August 2024, weather permitting.

Detours are in place to guide motorists around the work zone. Residents should follow the marked detours.

The project includes a full road resurfacing, new pedestrian safety features like rectangular rapid-flashing beacons (RRFBs), reduced speed limits, improved sidewalks, and updated signage and pavement markings.

These improvements are designed to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. The RRFBs, installed at several intersections, are pedestrian-activated and designed to help people safely cross the street.

Additionally, at the request of city officials, the speed limit on North Howard Avenue will be reduced from 40 mph to 35 mph.
