ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Two St. Petersburg police officers, Tyler Martnick and Zharia Smith, are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a man from a burning house on the night of August 5th.

Responding to a hang-up call, the officers noticed smoke and heard cries for help near Paris Avenue South and 6th Street South. They traced the source to a house engulfed in flames with a man trapped inside a bedroom.

Officer Martnick courageously entered the house twice but was forced back by the intense heat and smoke. Determined, the officers removed the bedroom window frame and pulled the man to safety. The man, suffering from severe cuts and burns, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The St. Petersburg Fire Department praised Officers Martnick and Smith for their swift action and bravery, which undoubtedly saved the man’s life.
