Anglers along the Florida Gulf Coast are enjoying a mixed bag of fishing opportunities today. While Tropical Storm Debby has moved on, its lingering effects are still being felt in some areas, particularly with slightly murky water and scattered showers.

However, the weather is generally improving, with calmer winds and sunny breaks throughout the day.

Inshore:

  • Tampa Bay: Redfish are biting well around the flats and mangrove shorelines. Look for them near oyster bars and drop-offs. Live shrimp and soft plastic lures are working best.
  • Sarasota Bay: Snook are active in the passes and along the beaches. Use live baitfish or topwater lures during the early morning and late afternoon for the best action. Trout are also being caught around the grass flats.
  • Charlotte Harbor: Tarpon fishing is still hot in the harbor. Look for rolling fish and target them with large live baits or artificial lures. Mangrove snapper are also biting well around the bridges and docks.

Offshore:

  • Nearshore Reefs: Snapper fishing remains consistent, with mangrove, lane, and vermillion snapper all being caught. Use chum and small pieces of squid or shrimp for bait.
  • Deepwater: Grouper season is open, and anglers are reporting good catches of gag and red grouper in deeper waters. Live pinfish or frozen sardines are popular baits.

Tips and Tactics:

  • Early Morning and Late Afternoon: These are generally the most productive times for fishing, as the cooler temperatures and lower light levels often trigger more fish activity.
  • Live Bait: Live shrimp, pinfish, and baitfish are all excellent choices for inshore and offshore fishing.
  • Artificial Lures: Soft plastic lures, topwater plugs, and jigs can also be effective, especially for species like snook and trout.
  • Check the Weather: Be sure to check the latest weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change quickly.
