The incident occurred at a family gathering on the Rosebud Reservation, where a dispute over a misplaced Xbox gaming console escalated into a physical fight. Medicine Eagle’s brother succumbed to head injuries sustained during the assault.

The case was prosecuted in federal court under the Major Crimes Act due to its occurrence on Indian land. The investigation was a joint effort by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the FBI.
