CLEARWATER, Fla. – Michael David Jones, 35, has been charged with DUI manslaughter following a fatal crash on Sunday morning in Sand Key.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 28, when a tractor-trailer was backing into the driveway of the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel. Jones, driving a 2007 F-150 pickup truck at a high speed, slammed into the tractor-trailer.

The impact tore the roof off the pickup, trapping both Jones and his passenger, Mark Harris, 42, of Valrico, inside.

Harris was pronounced dead at the scene, while Jones remains in critical condition at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

Jones was booked into the Pinellas County Jail late Thursday.

The crash initially closed Gulf Boulevard in the Sand Key area for several hours as authorities investigated.
