MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – Ashley Benefield, a former professional ballerina, is standing trial for the 2020 shooting death of her estranged husband, Doug Benefield. The defense argues that Benefield acted in self-defense, citing a history of alleged abuse in the relationship.

The couple’s tumultuous relationship and contentious custody battle over their young daughter have been central to the trial.

Benefield testified that her husband had been physically and emotionally abusive, and that she feared for her safety and that of their child.

Prosecutors, however, argue that Benefield’s actions were premeditated and not justified by self-defense. They point to evidence suggesting she was attempting to isolate their daughter from her father and that she had made prior statements about wanting him out of their lives.

The trial has drawn significant attention due to Benefield’s background as a professional ballerina and the dramatic nature of the allegations. The case has been dubbed the “Black Swan Murder Trial” by some media outlets, drawing parallels to the psychological thriller film.

The jury is expected to begin deliberations soon, and their verdict will determine Benefield’s fate. If convicted of second-degree murder, she could face a life sentence in prison.
