Florida high school athletes are now permitted to monetize their name, image, and likeness (NIL) through endorsements and other deals, following approval from the State Board of Education.

The decision, which ratifies a plan previously approved by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA), has been met with both excitement and caution.

Craig Damon, executive director of the FHSAA, likened NIL deals for high schoolers to traditional after-school jobs, emphasizing the distinction from college athletes’ deals, which often involve larger sums of money. Damon assured that most deals for high school athletes will be local in nature and not involve exorbitant amounts.

However, concerns have been raised about the potential exploitation of student-athletes, particularly minors. Board member Esther Byrd advocated for establishing a state registry to monitor participants in NIL deals and protect them from unscrupulous actors.

While acknowledging the need for further safeguards, the board’s decision marks a significant step towards allowing young athletes to benefit financially from their talent and hard work.
