A federal grand jury has indicted Casey Robert Goonan, 34, from Oakland and Pleasant Hill, for allegedly firebombing a University of California Police Department (UCPD) patrol car on June 1, 2024.
The indictment alleges that Goonan brought six Molotov cocktails onto the UC Berkeley campus and ignited them under a UCPD vehicle. Although the car did not explode, it sustained significant damage and was declared a total loss.
Goonan is charged with multiple offenses, including maliciously damaging property belonging to an institution receiving federal financial assistance by means of fire or an explosive, maliciously damaging property used in interstate commerce by means of fire or an explosive, and possession of an unregistered firearm.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count of damaging property by fire or explosive, and up to 10 years for the unregistered firearm charge. Goonan pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in federal custody.
This case is being prosecuted by the National Security and Cyber Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, with investigation conducted by the FBI, ATF, CalFire, and the UCPD.
