Democrats believe America is ready to elect a woman as president, but the idea of a two-woman ticket is met with hesitation.

According to Politico, this sentiment was echoed throughout New Hampshire this week as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer campaigned to energize party activists about Vice President Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic nominee.

While Democrats expressed enthusiasm for Harris, they also praised Whitmer’s qualifications, describing her as a competent governor with future presidential or vice-presidential potential.

However, the outlet reported that the prospect of Whitmer joining Harris on the ticket sparked reservations.

“I don’t know that the country is ready for two women at the top of the ticket,” Alison Hamilton, a Portsmouth Democrat, told Politico after hearing Whitmer speak at a house party in Durham.

“We’re there for Kamala,” added Jan Collier, Hamilton’s sister. “Two women? I don’t know.”

As Harris considers her running mate options, Democrats are weighing the merits of various governors and other potential candidates, most of whom are men. Despite a desire among some Democrats to see a two-woman ticket, many are not convinced the country is prepared for it.

Whitmer, whose strong electoral record in Michigan has made her a popular vice-presidential contender, insists that America can support an all-female ticket.

“Of course America can have two women on a national ticket. We’ve had two men since the dawn of time,” Whitmer told Politico. “Women can lead, as we’ve shown in many states where you have great women leaders.”

Despite her support for the idea, Whitmer has repeatedly stated she has no interest in the vice-presidential position and is not involved in the selection process.

She also downplayed any talk of future presidential ambitions.
